Why we make Maev Raw Food frozen

Besides the delicious crunch, frozen textures help extract the maximum nutritional value from every bowl. Here’s why.

Before launching Maev Raw Food in 2019, we spent three years working with the best veterinary experts and nutritionists to land the perfect formula. Part of this process was considering what food textures our dogs actually like and need to eat.

Besides the appetizing and cooling crunch of a frozen bite, we discovered that Raw Food reaches its maximum nutritional value possible when served frozen. Here’s why.

Why serve my dog’s food frozen?

Many dogs have a habit of “vacuum eating,” or slurping down food without pause or portion control. This exposes dogs (particularly larger breeds) to dangerous gut issues and choking risks, and contributes to unhealthy weight gain.

Frozen foods actually prevent overeating, forcing your dog to slow down their eating process to avoid brain freeze and a stomachache. With slow and steady chewing, your dog can actually break down and absorb every bite of nutrition.

What does “flash-frozen” mean?

Flash freezing is a method of freezing ingredients quickly so the proteins don’t degrade and lose their whole nutritional value. Unlike other slower freezing methods, the speed of flash-freezing prevents freezer burn that decreases nutrient quality.

Once flash-frozen, our Raw Food is safe to be shipped and stored frozen in your at-home freezer for up to 6 months.

What are the nutritional benefits?

Besides preventing overeating, dental hygiene and health is the number one benefit to feeding frozen. Maev’s frozen texture is designed to gently exfoliate excess tartar and plaque buildup off your dog’s teeth. The result? Less expensive and painful trips to the dog dentist.

Is frozen food easily digestible?

Yes, eating frozen food is completely healthy for dogs. Many people have heard an internet myth that was heavily spread around 2010 about a dog owner who worried about bloat after giving her dog ice cubes. This has since been repeatedly proven to be false. Whether you’re giving your dog ice cubes, frozen treats, or frozen Maev, it's completely healthy for their digestive system.

What about for small dogs?

Yes, 100%. Maev’s Raw Food formula was meticulously checked by veterinary doctors and nutritionists to ensure it’s consumable and compatible with all dog sizes.

However, if your dog is prone to choking or speed-eating, simply thaw their Raw Food for 10-15 minutes before serving.
