The Maev Team’s Guide to Austin, TX

Isabelle, Baby, and Ruby

The Place Baby Loves: Town Lake Trail

Why She Loves It: Now it’s not the most trailblazing recommendation (pun intended), but Town Lake Trail is tried-and-true. Baby loves the lively squirrel and turtle population, and I love how giant trees give consistent shade along the path. Worth noting: No matter the day or time, you’ll likely run into someone you know on the trail.

The Place Baby Loves: Sour Duck Market

Why She Loves It: If Baby could talk, I’m 99.9% sure she wouldn’t claim Sour Duck Market as one of her “favorite spots” in all of Austin. But considering she can’t talk and I’m the one writing this, I’ve opted to include it because what’s not to love? It’s one of those all-in-one neighborhood staples where you can grab a quick latte, stay for a killer brunch, or come back later for a cocktail and seeded pretzel with queso. Perfection, in my opinion.

The Place Ruby Loves: Armadillo Den

Why She Loves It: Perhaps I’m showing my age with this one, but Armadillo Den in South Austin never fails to provide a good time and a great spicy margarita. It’s a bit removed from the beaten path, has a spacious, ranch-like vibe, a 2-story bar, and multiple food trucks. I mean, their slogan is “Bring your dog, your mom, and your dog’s mom.” Need I say more?

Maddy and Pete

The Place Pete Loves: June’s All Day

Why He Loves It: June’s has a great dog-friendly patio with awnings, misters, and a rotation of fresh water bowls. I highly recommend the artichoke and the fried chicken sandwich. Pete recommends the fries.

The Place Pete Loves: Barton Creek Greenbelt (Violet Crown Trail)

Why He Loves It: We love the Barton Creek Greenbelt Trail. We prefer the Violet Crown Trailhead entrance (2212 William Barton Drive) because of ample parking which is free on the weekdays. However, there are multiple access points if a different location is closer to you! The Greenbelt feels like a true escape — it’s shady and way less crowded than the Town Lake Trail.

IMPORTANT: It is pretty rocky and rugged in some parts, so come prepared with the right footwear and bring water. For us, there’s generally far less dog / people distraction and congestion, which helps Pete stay focused and in the groove. During the summer, the creek beds often run dry, but heading into the fall and winter there are great spots to cool off and take a quick dip along the way. The entire trail is a 14.2 out-and-back, so lots of variability in distance and effort. IMPORTANT: It is pretty rocky and rugged in some parts, so come prepared with the right footwear and bring water.

Katie, George and Winnie

The Place Winnie and George Love: The 1417 Patio

Why She Loves It: 1417 has an amazing brunch and an even better dinner. Their patio is one of the least expected dog-friendly options (for the classy dogs). Winnie and George have both enjoyed a 1:1 meal here with their mom.

The Place Winnie Loves: Ski Shores Cafe

Why She Loves It: Winnie loves the energy of Ski Shores. There’s sunbathing, there’s pickleball, there are boats, turtles, birds, and butterflies. Winnie enjoys the outdoors when the outdoors come to her (with an ice cold bowl of water, an adirondack chair, and maybe a treat).

Trevor and Murphy

The Place Murphy Loves: Red Bud Isle

Why He Loves It: Red Bud is a lovely oasis close to downtown. It’s secluded and small, so running around off leash is no problem.  Plus, there’s lots of great terrain, smells, and friends to make.

Michael and Dresden

The Place Dresen Loves: Bull Creek Trail

Why He Loves It: Even at nearly 13 years old, Dresden cherishes outdoor activities (especially short trail walks). Bull Creek Trail, particularly in the early mornings, provides the perfect tranquil environment for Dresden to enjoy. The trail's well-maintained terrain is ideal for a senior dog like Dresden, ensuring her safety and comfort during her walks. These outings serve as more than just exercise for Dresden. They also stimulate her mind, keeping her sharp and engaged. Dresden's sociable nature shines as she eagerly greets people along the trail, reveling in the opportunity for interaction and connection. Although she enjoys meeting other dogs, Dresden's affection for human companionship truly shines during these outdoor adventures.
