5 Things You Need to Level Up Your Dog’s Winter Routine
When it’s cold, rainy, and/or snowy outside, we highly recommend adding these 5 things to your dog’s routine so you can still walk, jog, hike, and play with them safely and comfortably.
Add a protective, moisturizing barrier to your dog’s paw pads.
We love Musher’s Secret Dog Paw Wax (safe and all-natural, so even if they lick their feet, you’re in good hands) or Vaseline’s All-over Body Balm (it’s unscented and the application is less messy).
Throw some booties on them.
Their paws are tough, but for extended periods of time spent in colder climates, you may want to add another layer of protection to keep them safe and warm (and dry). We’re partial to Canadian Pooch Soft Shield Boots. -
Pro Tip: If they’re resisting their fancy footwear, let them take a test drive in the house first so they can get their bearings before navigating the cold terrain.
3. Post winter walk, wipe those paws to remove salt, debris, and other irritants, then remoisturize.
Tip: Keep a dedicated dog drying towel on-hand (near the doorway or in your mudroom). It can be an old favorite that you no longer use or we love a non-toxic baby wipe like Coterie's.
4. Layer up!
Low temperatures and heavy rain/ snowfall shouldn’t deter you from stretching your/ their legs. To keep them cozy and dry, add a protective, water-resistant coat to their wardrobe. Canadian Pooch Parkas are another Maev Team favorite.
5. Keep them well fed and hydrated.
In order to bolster your dog’s energy levels and immune function during the winter months, it’s important to ensure that they are receiving their daily intake of calories and water. Did you know that dogs receive the majority of their water needs through diet, not their water bowls?
