Sit Down With Maev’s (First) Dog of the Month
This may come as a surprise, but there’s nothing we love more than celebrating dogs. So, each month we’re spotlighting a dog from our community. To kick things off, we’d like you to meet Cairo. He’s a Leo Sun, prefers chasing squirrels, loves quality time in nature, and has a really cute prance up his sleeve.
Tell us about your dog’s origin story (how they chose you, how you chose them, or how they got their name).
When deciding to become a dog mom, I was drawn to the Italian Greyhound breed (due to their uniqueness, sleek builds, and quirky personalities).
In September 2016, I was on the search for a blue/gray male Italian Greyhound and started to look further into the breed. Since I wasn’t in a rush, I debated waiting a few more months or even a year before getting a dog.
However, I came across a Craigslist post — and in doing further research —I established a relationship with a breeder based in Dallas, Texas. They emailed photos of the litter, and I responded with how beautiful the pups were, but that I preferred a gray male and would be in touch.
A week or so later, I received an unexpected message from the breeder informing me that a couple had changed their minds at the last minute on homing their last pup from the litter. He was the adorable brown male iggy from the photos — the only one with his eyes open.
I didn’t need much time to make a decision. Intuitively, I felt that he was meant to be a part of my life. I decided to name him Cairo (due to my fascination and connection to Kemet, or Ancient Egypt).

What’s your absolute favorite thing about your dog? I love that Cairo is one-of-a-kind. He has such cat and human-like qualities. He never ceases to amaze me with his attention to detail — how he loves to be underneath a cover, his need for snuggles and closeness, his jitteriness, the way he prances proudly, his affinity for sunbathing and Nature, his ability to communicate, his unconditional love, his silliness — the list goes on!
What’s your dog’s favorite thing about you? Probably the fact that I feed him Maev! Cairo enjoys the simple things like my presence and my love.
If you could text your dog (or if they could text you), what would you say or ask (or what would they say or ask)? We would probably send one another new places to explore in nature and things about dog-specific holistic healing modalities. Cairo absolutely loves massages and yoga, so he would probably ask for “skritches” and rubs and teach me his exceptional downward dog posture.
What’s your dog’s go-to Maev product? The beef formula! As soon as he hears the bag crinkle he’s all ears and excited to eat. He finishes every bite and sniffs around for more as though another scoop will magically appear in his empty bowl.
